Wisconsin State Law
The parents of Wisconsin enjoy some of the best homeschool laws in the country. Because we are not subjected to testing and oversight by public school authorities, we are responsible for keeping ourselves accountable for the optimum education for our children.
Wisconsin requires “at least 875 hours of instruction each school year” and “a sequentially progressive curriculum of fundamental instruction in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and health.”
Form PI-1206 must be filled out by each homeschooling family and sent to the Department of Public Instruction no later than October 15th. WHPA (Wisconsin Homeschooling Parents Association) encourages parents not to file the form before October as the form is not asking for permission to homeschool, but only notifying the DPI of the parent’s decision to educate their children at home.
The form is available to be filled out online, https://dpi.wi.gov/sms/home-based. Maintaining an attendance record for your homeschool is not required by Wisconsin law, but is recommended by the WHPA.
